Claude Artifact Too Large to Share: The Limit and the Fix

Display is our product. We checked the Anthropic facts on 14 October 2026.

TL;DR
The Claude Code documentation says that a rendered artifact page must be 16 MiB or smaller. It says that large embedded images are the usual cause of a size failure. The Claude Help Center gives no size limit for chat artifacts. Users report that a public share fails on large pages. Make the page smaller, or publish the HTML to a host with more space. Display (display.dev) accepts 50 MB for each artifact on paid plans.

Exact error text when a public share is too largeAnthropic does not document it. One third-party writer reports "This version can't be shared publicly"Stacktree blog, 13 September 2026. We did not check it

Do not use 16 MiB as a safe target for a public share. One user report on GitHub describes a page of about 13 to 14 MB that failed. Anthropic did not give the cause. Expect problems above about 10 MB.

Where the size comes from

  • Images as data URIs. A base64 image is about one third larger than the image file. Four screenshots can be 8 MB.
  • Inline libraries. React, a chart library or Babel, pasted into the page.
  • Nested iframes. Each srcdoc iframe holds its own copy of everything it needs.
  • Embedded data. A dashboard that holds the full dataset, not a summary.

Five ways to make it smaller

  1. Measure it. Ask Claude: "How many bytes is the HTML file? List the five largest blocks." Image data is usually at the top.
  2. Replace raster images. Use SVG, or HTML and CSS, for diagrams. Compress photographs before you embed them.
  3. Load libraries from an allowed CDN. A published page can load scripts from cdnjs, unpkg, the Tailwind and jQuery CDNs and some paths on jsDelivr. It can load fonts from Google Fonts. Claude Code blocks all other external requests. Ask Claude to load the library from one of those hosts.
  4. Summarize the data. Embed the totals, not the raw rows.
  5. Split the page. Publish three artifacts that link to each other, or replace nested iframes with one document.

Then publish a new version. The share check runs on the version that you share. If you share the old version again, nothing changes.

Or publish the file to a host with more space

Some pages are large on purpose, for example a design system with every component or a report with the charts inside. Publish the HTML to Display.

  • Limit. 10 MB for each artifact on Free. 50 MB on Solo, Pro and Enterprise. Uploads without an account also accept up to 50 MB.
  • From Claude chat. Use the Display connector. Claude sends small pages in the request.
  • From Claude Cowork. Use staged uploads. Claude calls create_upload, sends the file to api.display.dev, then calls publish. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner must first add api.display.dev to the allowlist for code execution. On Pro and Max, you cannot add the domain. Ask a coding agent in your terminal to publish the file to Display, or upload it in the dashboard.
  • From Claude Code. Tell the agent: "Publish ./report.html to Display as a Company page."

On Display, colleagues open the page with their company email. It is a static page. If your artifact calls Claude connectors through the Claude viewer, that live data does not come with it.

FAQ

What is the size limit for a Claude artifact?+

For a Claude Code artifact, 16 MiB for the rendered page. For a chat artifact, the Claude Help Center does not give a limit.

What does "This version can't be shared publicly" mean?+

Anthropic does not document it. Users report it on large pages. Publish a smaller version, or host the file on a different host.

Does the limit apply when only I view the artifact?+

Users report that large pages still open for the owner. Anthropic does not document this.

Can Display host a page larger than 50 MB?+

No. The limit is 50 MB for each artifact on every paid plan, Enterprise too. Split the page.

Why does Claude Code refuse my file?+

The published file must be .html, .htm or .md, and valid UTF-8. Claude Code refuses a file that contains the replacement character U+FFFD, and tells you the line and column to fix.
