How to use the Markdown viewer

  1. Paste Markdown into the source box, or drop a .md file on it. To see how the tool works, select Load an example.
  2. Read the formatted document in the preview. The preview changes while you type. Select Dark to read it in a dark color scheme.
  3. To send the document to someone, select Get a link. Display publishes the Markdown and gives you a URL and a claim link.

Limits

  • The tool renders and publishes up to 5 MB of Markdown. For files up to 50 MB, publish with the Display CLI.
  • The preview shows headings, lists, tables, code blocks, links, images and strikethrough.
  • Mermaid diagrams, math, callouts, task lists and footnotes show as text or code in the preview. Display draws them on the published page.
  • Scripts in the Markdown do not run. The preview loads only images from the web.
  • Links in the document open inside the preview frame.
  • Get a link makes a public link. Anyone with the URL can open it for 30 days. Search engines do not index it.

Markdown viewer questions

Does the Markdown viewer send my file to Display?

No. The document renders in your browser. Display receives the Markdown only when you select Get a link.

Which Markdown does the viewer read?

CommonMark with GitHub tables and strikethrough. Raw HTML in the Markdown renders too, but scripts in it do not run.

Why does the published page look different from the preview?

Display publishes Markdown with its own reading theme, and it draws Mermaid diagrams, math and callouts. The text and the structure are the same.

How long does the link work?

30 days. Open the claim link and sign in to keep the document in your Display organization. After you claim it, you can make it open only for people at your company.
