Where Workplane is genuinely good
The artifact is a real filesystem. A Workplane artifact holds folders and files. An agent can ls a path, read one file, write another, edit a string in place, rm a folder, and downloadZip the whole thing. Markdown, HTML, images, and PDFs render as pages. display.dev hosts one HTML or Markdown file per artifact. The agent reads, searches, and edits that file. It does not get a folder.
Snapshots with their own addresses. saveVersion freezes the work in progress as a named version. abc12/review/@v1 stays where it is while the working copy moves on. That is a clean model, and the same address grammar works in the browser and in MCP.
Twelve MCP tools and a one-request HTTP path. The MCP surface is deeper than a publish verb. The HTTP path publishes up to 50 files in one authenticated request, which helps in clients where installing MCP is awkward.

Per-artifact roles for known collaborators. A private artifact can grant a Workplane user viewer or editor access. That is better than a shared password.
Workplane's two builders describe it as a side project. That is not a flaw. It does set the terms: the service is free, offered "as is", and the terms ask users to keep their own backups.
Where display.dev wins: the organization, not the file
- The organization owns the work
- A Workplane artifact belongs to the person who created it. A display.dev artifact belongs to your organization, with Owners, Admins, and Members. Work published under the organization stays with the organization.
- Everyone at your company, with no list to maintain
- Workplane's private audience is a list of named Workplane users. display.dev's Company audience is everyone who signs in with your verified company email domain. Nobody adds names one by one, and a new hire is in on day one.
- Google and Microsoft, or no account at all
- A Workplane reader of a private page needs a Workplane account, which means Google. On display.dev, Pro members sign in with Google or Microsoft. On every plan, a one-time password works. An invited reader outside the company enters the one-time password sent to their address and creates nothing.
- Comments your agent reads back
- Workplane's homepage shows an agent updating a page from a comment. Its documented MCP tools include no way to read a comment, and its skill tells the agent to open the website. On display.dev, the agent reads the comment through MCP, publishes the next version to the same URL, and resolves the thread.
- A record of who did what
- Every version and comment on display.dev names the person or agent behind it. The Pro plan keeps 90 days of audit logs, Enterprise 365. Workplane shows who saved a version. It documents no audit history.
- Never public unless you choose it
- A signed-in publish on display.dev starts Private. A publish with an organization service key starts at Company. No path starts public. Workplane's own skill documents its HTTP publish path as public by default.
- Publish from the terminal
dsp publish ./report.htmlworks in any shell. Workplane's public repository says its CLI was shelved.
Who can open it
A public URL with no sign-in, the same as a public Workplane page.
Named email addresses only, for a client or a contractor. They use a one-time password. No Workplane account, no Google account, no account at all.
Anyone who signs in with a verified company domain. On Pro that is Google Workspace or Microsoft Entra ID. On every plan, a one-time password also works. Viewers are unlimited and free on every plan.
You change the level any time. Move an artifact from company to public and back. The URL stays the same.

Is display.dev a Workplane alternative?
Yes, for the same job. An agent publishes Markdown or HTML, a person opens a link, and later updates create versions. Workplane does that for one person's account. display.dev does it for an organization. That adds a company-wide audience, Google or Microsoft sign-in, invited readers who need no account, comments the agent reads back, and an audit log.
Does Workplane have company sign-in or SSO?
Not in its public documentation. Workplane accounts sign in with Google. A private artifact opens for Workplane users the owner names. There is no company-domain audience, Microsoft sign-in, one-time password, or SAML in its documented contract.
Can someone without a Workplane account read a private Workplane page?
Not as documented. A private Workplane artifact opens for Workplane users granted viewer or editor access. A reader without an account can open the page only if it is public. On display.dev, an invited outside reader uses a one-time password and creates no account.
Can my agent read comments on Workplane?
Not through its documented tools. Workplane's 12 MCP tools cover files, versions, and access. Its skill tells the agent to open the website to read comments. On display.dev the agent reads comments through MCP and publishes the next version.
Does display.dev support multi-file artifacts like Workplane?
No. A display.dev artifact is one HTML or Markdown file. Embed assets in the HTML, or publish each page as its own artifact. If your agent needs to read and write a folder of files by path, Workplane does that job today.
Is Workplane free?
