How to Send a Client a Private Link to an HTML Report

TL;DR
Publish the HTML file to a host that checks who the visitor is before it serves the page. Then invite the client by email. With Display (display.dev), the docs workspace for agents and people, you ask your agent to publish report.html as Private and to share it with anna@client.com. The client opens the link and enters a one-time password sent to that address. The report opens as you built it, with its charts and interactions. The client needs no account and gets no shared password to forward. When you publish an update, the same link shows the new version. Free covers 3 gated artifacts. Solo (€15 a month) makes them unlimited. Viewers are unlimited on every plan.

How the options compare

The cost row is for one sender and 20 client viewers. A dash (–) means that we could not check the fact on the vendor's own pages.

Notes on the table:

  • Google Drive stores an HTML file. It does not serve it as a web page. Read why file sharing cannot show HTML.
  • A Netlify or Tiiny Host password is one password for all readers. Anyone with the password can read the page.
  • The DocSend pricing page did not open for us, so this page gives no DocSend price.

How to send the report with Display

Ask your agent to publish the report. A publish with your own login starts as Private.

Connect Display to Cursor, Codex, Claude Code or any other agent. The docs have a setup guide for each agent. Then give this prompt:

Publish q3-report.html to Display as Private, share it with anna@client.com, and give
me the link.

The agent publishes the file, invites Anna, and returns the link. To change the report next month, ask the agent to update the page at the same link. To invite more people later, ask the agent to share the page with them.

What the client sees

  1. Anna opens the link. A screen asks for the email address that your invitation went to.
  2. Display sends a one-time password to that address. Anna enters it.
  3. The report opens in her browser with its charts, tabs and filters.

She does not create an account and does not install anything. Anna can open the report again later. A forwarded link does not give access to anyone else, because the page checks the email address. A person who is not invited cannot tell that the page exists.

To remove one person, ask the agent to remove that email address from the page. Other invited people keep access.

Limits

  • One file for each artifact. Display accepts one HTML or Markdown file for each link. Publishing a folder or a ZIP file is on the roadmap.
  • File size. 10 MB on Free. 50 MB on Solo, Pro and Enterprise.
  • Clients can view. They cannot comment yet. Invited outside people read the page. They cannot comment or edit. Your own team can comment.
  • Who opened it. Solo shows view counts. Pro and Enterprise show viewer identity. In the artifact header, outside guests who have the page open show as "Guest", without their email address.
  • No link expiry. An invited person keeps access until you remove them.
  • No custom domain yet. Links use a dsp.so address. Custom domains are on the roadmap.
  • Versions. Free keeps the latest version only. Solo keeps 10 and Pro keeps 50.

When another tool is better

  • You sell a PDF deck and need to know which page a buyer read. Use DocSend or Papermark.
  • The client edits with you. Use Google Docs.
  • You publish a public site with many files. Use Netlify Drop or Cloudflare Pages.

FAQ

Does my client need an account?+

No. The client enters the invited email address and a one-time password. Display does not ask the client to create an account.

Can I use a shared password instead?+

Display does not use one shared password. Access is for each email address. A shared password cannot tell you who opened the page, and you cannot remove one person without a change for everyone. Read How to password-protect an HTML file.

Can I see if they opened it?+

Yes, in part. The page header shows who has it open now, with the version that each person views. Outside people show as Guest. Solo shows view counts. Pro and Enterprise show viewer identity. Display sends no notification on the first open. Read How to know if someone opened your link.

Can my client comment?+

Not yet. Invited outside people can view the page. Comments from outside people are on the roadmap. Today, the client replies by email or in your usual channel, and your team comments on the page.

What happens when I update the report?+

The next version shows at the same link. The client opens the link again and sees the new version. An open tab shows a Refresh to vN action.

What does it cost for one client?+

Free is €0 and holds 3 gated artifacts. Solo is €15 a month and holds an unlimited number. Pro is €49 a month. There is no fee for each viewer, so more clients do not change the price. Read the pricing page.

Is this safe for confidential data?+

The page checks the identity of the visitor before the server sends the file. The owner of the artifact controls the invitation list. On Pro and Enterprise, an Owner can also restrict Public artifacts or outside sharing for the whole organization. Do not publish data that your contract does not let you store with a third party.
