# HTML to Markdown

Paste HTML or drop an .html file to get clean Markdown. Headings, lists, tables, links and code blocks keep their structure. The tool removes scripts, styles and forms.

Open the tool: https://display.dev/tools/html-to-markdown

## How to use the HTML to Markdown

1. Paste HTML into the source box, or drop an .html file on it. To see how the tool works, select Load an example.
2. Read the Markdown in the output pane. Select Preview to see the Markdown as a formatted document.
3. Select Copy to put the Markdown on your clipboard, or select Download .md to save a file.
4. To send the converted document to someone, select Get a link. Display publishes the Markdown and gives you a URL and a claim link.

### Get a link without the browser

Agents can publish the same file through the anonymous endpoint that the Get a link button uses. The response holds a preview URL, a single-use claim URL and the expiry date.

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.display.dev/v1/public/artifacts -F file=@document.md
```

## Limits

- The tool converts and publishes up to 5 MB of HTML. For files up to 50 MB, publish with the Display CLI.
- The tool keeps headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, links, images, quotes, code, bold, italic and strikethrough.
- The tool removes scripts, styles, forms, buttons, frames, video and inline SVG. It keeps the text inside all other elements.
- Tables become Markdown tables. A merged cell becomes one cell, so the row can end with empty cells. A list inside a cell becomes one line.
- Links and images keep the URL from the HTML. Relative URLs stay relative. Links that start with javascript or data become plain text.
- Get a link makes a public link. Anyone with the URL can open it for 30 days. Search engines do not index it.

## HTML to Markdown questions

**Q: Does the converter send my HTML to Display?**

No. The conversion runs in your browser. Display receives the Markdown only when you select Get a link.

**Q: Does the HTML run when I paste it?**

No. The tool reads the HTML as text and builds the Markdown from it. Scripts do not run, and images and styles do not load.

**Q: Why is a word in my Markdown written with a backslash?**

The backslash stops Markdown from reading a character as formatting. For example, \*star\* shows the asterisks instead of italic text.

**Q: How long does the link work?**

30 days. Open the claim link and sign in to keep the document in your Display organization. After you claim it, you can make it open only for people at your company.
