# AGENTS.md checker

Paste an AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md file to check it before you commit it. The checker finds missing test commands, broken links, personal paths, likely secrets and other problems, and names the source of each rule.

Open the tool: https://display.dev/tools/agents-md-checker

## How to use the AGENTS.md checker

1. Paste the file into the source box, or drop an AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md file on it. To see how the tool works, select Load an example.
2. Select AGENTS.md or CLAUDE.md. When you drop a file, the tool selects the type from the file name.
3. Read the report. Each item names the rule's source. Fix items come first, then Check items, then notes.
4. Select Preview to read the file as a formatted document. To send it to someone for review, select Get a link.

### Get a link without the browser

Agents can publish the same file through the anonymous endpoint that the Get a link button uses. The response holds a preview URL, a single-use claim URL and the expiry date.

```bash
curl -X POST https://api.display.dev/v1/public/artifacts -F file=@document.md
```

## Limits

- The checks are rules of thumb. They read the text and do not run commands or open your repository.
- The tool cannot see your files, so it lists relative links and @path imports for you to check.
- The token count is an estimate of about 4 characters for each token. Each model counts tokens differently.
- The key and token check finds common formats only. When it finds nothing, the file can still contain a secret.
- The rules come from agents.md and from the Claude Code documentation, as read on 14 October 2026.
- Get a link makes a public link. Anyone with the URL can open it for 30 days. Search engines do not index it.

## AGENTS.md checker questions

**Q: What does an AGENTS.md file need?**

AGENTS.md is plain Markdown with no required fields. The agents.md site suggests a project overview, build and test commands, code style, testing instructions and security notes.

**Q: How long can a CLAUDE.md file be?**

The Claude Code documentation recommends less than 200 lines for each CLAUDE.md file. Longer files use more context, and Claude follows them less consistently.

**Q: Does Claude Code read AGENTS.md?**

Yes. Current versions of Claude Code read AGENTS.md when the project has no CLAUDE.md. To use both, add an @AGENTS.md import to your CLAUDE.md.

**Q: Does the checker send my file to Display?**

No. The checks run in your browser. Display receives the Markdown only when you select Get a link.
